The credit card debt management industry has risen in popularity in recent years. The increased availability of credit over the last few decades has left many people with more debt than they can feasibly dream of paying. Consumer debt settlement is the fastest way to pay off the money you owe without the harsh consequences of bankruptcy. While debt consolidation programs simply replace multiple payments with one payment, settlement programs actually lower the total amount owed so that one monthly payment can eliminate the debt faster.

This type of credit card debt management is better suited for individuals who have more than $10,000 in debt or have not made payments on their debt in several months. Debt consolidation programs, on the other hand, are typically suggested for student loans with low interest, and those loans should typically not be settled or consolidated with credit card debts.

Consumer debt settlement is fairly simple. The professional credit card debt management firms negotiate with lenders on behalf of their clients. If you have not made a payment in six months, the lender is often willing to settle the account for much less with the assumption that it may be the only way they’ll see any money. In most cases the consumer can save between 40 and 60 percent of the total balance and have their debt paid off in less than three years. Your credit rating may go down during the negotiation and repayment process, but it will be easy to bring it back up once you’re debt-free, unlike bankruptcies that stay on your record for at last seven years.
